I Don’t Need the Internet: A Cautionary Tale


Recent announcements that Office Max Grand & Toy are closing all remaining 19 retail stores in Canada should provide a cautionary tale for retailers. Simon Finch, general manager for Canadian operations, noted that “these store closures are a response to a shift in purchasing preferences of our business customers”. The company announced continued operation of its online division and supporting distribution centers. In response to the same customer preferences, Office Max Grand & Toy’s chief competitor, Staples, announced closure of 225 stores throughout its network and placed more emphasis on internet based sales.
